Welcome!
Wish you all a Happy New Year 2012!
As part of an exploratory study commissioned by Population Council, we undertook a study to understand reasons ans risks of dropping out of school. In Velhe, just 70 km from Pune city, We met girls, their parents, boys and other people and witnessed a world of poverty, hardships, neglect and apathy on part of government. In an era of technological revolutions, it was truly a world unseen and many dreams unmet.
We also reviewed the national and state level data on the status of child health in India. The situation is alarming and needs concerted effort to reverse the levels of malnutrition and stunting in children and mothers. The review was sponsored by TdH India. Report is available with Tathapi.
Our sessions on Menopause and Menstruation are receiving good response and so are the Body Literacy Workbooks. We are already onto a first reprint, over a thousand sets sold! The curriculum is being introduced in 9 schools across Maharashtra, from Gadchiroli to Vengurla! The response is good. We are now working towards adapting these for physically and visually challenged children. Your ideas are welcome.
Our campaign against Sex Selection is on. Our friend Alka wrote a play on Sex Selection and a Youth Group in Pune District put it up in the Ganesh Festival. It is available with us. We also produced a set of five posters on The PCPNDT Act. These were appreciated by many groups and will soon be distributed to all the elected representatives. The recent conviction of doctors will surely prove as deterrent to those still involved in the malpractice.
Anandi : Feminist Women’s Health Centre will focus on different services and avenues related to women’s health. There will be counselling, preventive, curative, referral, holistic and alternative health services. Women will learn self-help and rational health skill-building to include nutrition and wellness, menstruation and contraception, infertility, menopause and mental health care.
The centre as we see it will be an oasis in the current desert of specialized medicine and over - medicalisation of all aspects of women’s health. The atmosphere will be one where any query will receive technical and scientific information, referral options and peer support. Anandi will also be a place where women can learn, relax and be part of a collective that will reach many more women.
We are in the process of completing the translation of 'Where there is no psychiatrist' by Vikram Patel. This effort has been totally supported until now by individual donations. We request you to support this effort. This manual is written primarily for health workers and families they serve in the field. The author attempts to translate the often complex world of psychiatric concepts and jargon for readers who perhaps have had a limited exposure to the identification and treatment of mental health disorders.
